I hear lots of good things about fishing on Kodiak, but is it worth the hassle and expense when there is good fishing closer to main areas like anchorage and the Kenai?

If you can afford it, DO IT. If it is between Kodiak and feeding the fam obviously just fish closer to home.

Kodiak is great BECAUSE its less popular and therefore less crowded then the stuff in the Kenai.

I agree, the crowds are much less on Kodiak due to its remoteness. One thing I've found is if your fishing a popular area of Alaska, it can be shoulder to shoulder at some spots which takes away from the experience. I have been to Kodiak Island for fly fishing and plan to come back. One place I'd recommend is Chiniak Anglers Lodge www.kodiakfishinglodge.com. It is way down the road from downtown Kodiak so you get out to good fishing spots earlier and before everyone who stays in town. I'd recommend any Kodiak fishing lodge as opposed to a motel for obvious reasons, Im biased because of good fishing I've had there . But you must go, the salmon runs are awesome and I think there is a fishery on the island pumping out tons of fish yearly.
